Tröegs Brewing Company is a small, family-owned microbrewery supplying craft beers throughout the northeast. SMB&R collaborated with the Troeg brothers to develop the conceptual design and layout of the processing facility and assist in determining local code requirements for a number of scouted locations.
After a suitable location was identified, the designers tapped the owner's knowledge of the brewing process to transform the 12,000 square foot warehouse into an efficient manufacturing facility. Initial start-up costs for the new venture were a concern for the owner, so construction costs were minimized and the work was phased to allow development of the facility to occur alongside development of the product.
The design aspired to keep public spaces and manufacturing spaces separate. The company’s offices, toilet facilities, an olde English-style tasting room (since updated with more contemporary décor), and gift shop are located in one portion of the building. The brewing and manufacturing process facilities include a mill room for storage of grain, the brewhouse, fermentation areas, bottling lines, and a cold room for storage of cases and kegs until shipment.
